What is a gif file?
GIF is short for Graphics Interchange File. You can use a gif in the same way as you can use a jpeg file. The difference is a gif can be animated so that it appears as a moving image. Essentially it's a series of still images coded into a single file. We're seeing more and more of these on the web and they're great for creating basic animation.
What are the benefits of using an animated gif file?
One of the main benefits of an animated gif file is that it can stay at a low file size compared with other animated files types. This is useful because we want to keep images we put on the web as small as possible (whilst keeping their quality) so that we have quick loading times and our customers don't get frustrated. We want customers to have a great web user experience and quick loading times can be the difference between someone staying on your site/ e-newsletter and going else where.
A gif can also dramatically pull in the attention of potential customers more than a still jpeg can. A good example of where you could use a gif file to make a difference to your normal marketing materials would be to replace the header image of your e-newsletter. According to an A/B test conducted by BlueFly, emails featuring an animated gif pulled in 12% more revenue that their non-animated version. Notice we've changed this month's Macsima e-newsletter's header.
Another great example of where to replace a still image like a jpeg with a gif image is on social media feeds. This can really grab attention of important existing and potential customers. For example, the fashion brand urban outfitters use it when they launch a new product. In our opinion it subconsciously creates that sense of buzz and excitement which is perfect for something like a new product launch, news or something extra special to announce.
When creating gif files we feel it is important to keep to our favourite design moto "less is more".
